Avoid problems with snow and ice this winter

By December 15, 2014Tips

In most cases, local laws regulate the obligation to clear snow and ice from your property. Usually, sidewalks, steps and pathways must be cleared within 24 hours after the snow stops.

Remember, snow and ice should be thoroughly removed from the area. Partially clearing an area—for example, shoveling only the middle portion of a set of steps or a sidewalk—may actually create more of a hazard. The mounds of packed snow or ice on either side of a narrow path may cause someone to slip and fall.

Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, check the terms of your lease to make sure you know who is responsible for snow and ice removal. If the responsibility is yours, make sure you do a thorough job.
