Taking Fido or Fluffy on Vacation?

DogCat 2If you’re fond of taking the family dog or cat on vacation, you aren’t alone.

According to a Pet Travel Survey, Americans love including their pets in their vacation plans. Eighty-five percent of dog owners say they take Fido on vacation, while 22 percent of those surveyed enjoy bringing their cat to their favorite vacation spot.

Is bringing your dog or cat on vacation a good idea? Consider these points before deciding:

  • Is your pet used to traveling by car, plane or train? Arthritic pets may have difficulty getting comfortable in a crate, while other pets may become anxious and behave not so nicely when traveling.
  • Can your pet handle being alone in a strange place? If you want to go out to dinner, see a movie or enjoy an amusement park, you’ll have to leave Fido or Fluffy alone in your hotel or condo room.
  • Some pets may not enjoy unfamiliar surroundings. What if your pet runs away?
  • Are you prepared for pet emergencies? Have a list of vets and their contact information just in case Fido or Fluffy needs immediate medical attention.

If you don’t think Fido or Fluffy will fit into your overall vacation plans, no problem. Have your pet boarded in a reliable kennel or ask a relative or close friend to stay in your home with your pet.
