Will my personal auto policy cover a rental vehicle

If you are going on vacation this summer and plan on using a rental vehicle to reach your destination, you may want to check with your insurance provider to see if your personal auto insurance covers a rental vehicle. car rentalThe majority of auto insurance companies extend coverage from your personal auto policy to a rental vehicle. With most policies, coverage pays for actual repairs to the rental vehicle, but you remain responsible for your policy deductible. Additionally, some companies may limit the coverage based on the value of the insured vehicle. The rental agreement often makes you responsible for additional items.

If your personal auto policy no longer includes comprehensive or collision coverage, the rental vehicle may not be covered if it’s stolen or damaged. In addition, if you rent a car outside of the United States, coverage may not be extended.

Many, but not all credit card companies offer rental insurance and will pay for damage to a rental vehicle if you pay with that card, but the coverage will be secondary to your personal auto policy. In other words, your credit card company may pick up whatever your personal auto insurer does not pay, such as your deductible.

It’s important to talk to your insurance provider and your credit card company on what is or is not covered on a rental vehicle.
