Deterring squatters

An Oklahoma woman got the surprise of her life when she returned home from a vacation recently. Someone was living in her house. The woman’s neighbors contacted her and told her that people were moving into her house while she and her boyfriend were on vacation in Mexico. She rushed home to find squatters living in her home. The woman called police, but the squatters provided a lease, claiming they were the victims of a Craigslist scam. Police did not make any arrests.

Experts say the best strategy is to make the house look occupied while you’re away.

Have neighbors check on your home if you can’t and set up a Google alert with your address to help flag scams. It also helps to have a copy of documents proving you are the homeowner.

Your homeowners policy would respond to this as a vandalism claim.
