Tips to Avoid Halloween Hazards

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department reminds homeowners to use common sense on trick-or-treat night.  With kids in costumes, candles in pumpkins and extra neighborhood pedestrian traffic, the chances of an accident or mishap increases on Halloween.

Home and automobile owners can take precautionary measures to reduce the chances of injury of having to file an insurance claim. Homeowners, be sure that your home is well-lit and in good repair in order to avoid trip-and-fall accidents by trick or treaters.

Motorists should drive slowly in residential areas and watch out for kids (and adults) who cross against the light, dart out from between parked cars and walk in the street.

Although the homeowners insurance won’t cover toilet paper in your trees, if your property is damaged by Halloween pranksters, the damage would likely be covered. And if you have comprehensive coverage on your automobile policy, the vehicle may be covered if it’s damaged by trick or treaters.

Keep your outdoor lights on and park your vehicle in the garage during Halloween. It may make all the difference.
