Tis the Season to Avoid Holiday Party Risks

The holidays are a time of celebration. But hosting a holiday party can come with some significant risks.

Driveways and sidewalks can be slick with snow and ice as the weather gets colder. Prevent slips and falls by thoroughly salting walkways. And don’t forget about indoor safety … make sure there is carpeting inside the door for guests to dry their shoes.

Party hosts should encourage responsible drinking and be willing to take a guest’s car keys or call a cab for those who drink too much.

Take special care to avoid serving anything that appears to be undercooked or spoiled. Don’t forget to properly wash fruits and vegetables and keep an eye on the temperature of meat, poultry and fish.

Prevent identity or property theft by removing items that may include account numbers from view, including checkbooks, bank statements and tax returns. Secure them to a safe or other protected area. Lock up valuables such as jewelry, money or heirlooms.

An unexpected lawsuit will put a damper on your holidays. Play it safe and protect yourself from an unfortunate accident at your holiday party in which you become liable for injuries.
