Oh Deer!

By September 17, 2018Information

If you are a Pennsylvania resident, chances are, you, a loved one, or friend have hit a deer while driving. In fact, Pennsylvania is the leading state when it comes to deer-related auto insurance claims. From mid-2016 to mid-2017, there were 141,145 insurance claims for Pennsylvania drivers who struck deer. The average claim cost was $4,179.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, deer are responsible for one-third of all animal-related claims. Your chances of hitting a deer while driving in Pennsylvania is 1 in 63. November is also the month you’re most likely to hit a deer, since it’s deer mating season.

Here’s what to do if you see an animal in the road – remove your foot from the accelerator and brake in a straight line. If you try to avoid the animal and swerve your vehicle, you may lose control and collide with another object (tree, guardrail, telephone pole) or with another vehicle.

Stay vigilant while driving.
