If you’ve just purchased a new home, think about updating your home security.
About three out of every four burglaries occur at a residential property, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The average home burglary results in a $2,400 loss. Although burglary is one of the most common household property crimes, it is also one of the easiest to prevent.
Here are some easy home security tips:
- Maintain your yard. Keep your shrubbery trimmed so criminals are unable to hide behind them.
- Install outdoor lighting. A well-lit exterior discourages criminals from hiding in your landscaping. It also makes your home less approachable. Lights with motion detectors are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
- Update your door and lock hardware. It’s always a good idea to replace your locks when you move into a new home. Evaluate window security and install additional security measures if needed.
- Meet your neighbors. The more friendly eyes watching out for your property, the better.
- Consider installing an alarm system or a video doorbell. Security systems and video doorbells are major deterrents for criminals.
- Beware of what you share on social media. Don’t tell everyone on social media your out-of-town vacation plans or business trips.
- Be careful with your trash. Make sure you break down boxes of the latest gadgets you’ve purchased. Criminals are always on the lookout for what they can come back and steal.
