Public / Independent Adjuster Bonds

Public adjusters are professionals hired by policyholders to evaluate, manage and negotiate their insurance claims. In contrast, independent adjusters are professionals who work on behalf of an insurance company to evaluate loss claims; they are not permitted to adjust claims on behalf of a policyholder. In most states, adjusters are required to file a license and permit surety bond in order to obtain their license.  The bond does not provide any protection to the public or independent adjuster. Instead, the bond protects the insurance company, state insurance department or policyholder from suffering a loss due to unlawful actions by the adjuster.

There is no nationwide bond requirement for licensed adjusters; therefore, the bond amount varies by state. The list shows the bond amount required by each state.
